Bandage Dress Bandage dresses and size underwear are two important pieces of clothing, especially for plus size…
We know that they are in there at the back of the drawer with the elastic stretched and a few holes in the fabric. Perhaps some stain or two as well. However, you cannot bring yourself to get rid of those comfortable worn-out underwear that you have been wearing since the beginning of time. Everyone knows the feeling of getting attached to clothing and getting rid of it is like throwing away your favorite childhood toy. Although it has faded or become scruffy, you still love it no matter what.
Whether it is women’s underwear or men’s boxers, the most recommended period to replace underwear is between 6 months to 1 year. If you want to give your underwear drawer an overhaul, here are some tips on what you should take into consideration and how to replace those panties with new ones.
Anatomy of an Underwear
Knowing the components of underwear can help you choose the right pair. Underwear includes parts such as the elastic waistband, the leg openings, and the gusset.
When do I know it is time to replace my underwear?
Although the recommended timeline of replacing the underwear is between 6 to 12-month, there is no exact scientific theory to determine how lasting is your underwear. It is best to look out for signs instead that would typically appear about a year or so of regular use. They are:-
- Stretchability – The elastic on the waist and around the legs will lose its stretchability over time. If you notice that your underwear has lost its stretch, then it means the time as come to get yourself a new pair.
- Fit – Your underwear won’t have a smooth fit like before once the stretch is gone. Saggy underwear is not only uncomfortable, they may bunch up under your clothing.
- The frequency of wear – The more frequent you wear your underwear, the more likely it will accumulate bacteria than those you only wear on special occasions. Although the risk for serious health problems is low, but it is better to avoid infection by replacing them.
- Breaking down of fabric – If the fabric is torn or beginning to fall apart, it is a sign that the undies need to be replaced.
- Your body has changed – People change their body sizes or shapes sometimes so no matter what body changes you experienced, you should have undies that fit comfortably. When your body has changed, your underwear needs to change as well.
- Comfort – Do not settle for undies that are not comfortable. Once it starts to get uncomfortable, change it.
What you should do with your old underwear
If your undies are sustainably made, you can compost them. Another alternative is to use them as cleaning rags around the house but do be conscious of where you use them.
How to make underwear last longer?
The best way to make your underwear last longer lies in how you care for it.
Have several pairs of undies – It makes sense to have a few pairs of underwear in your rotation. Every time you wash your lingerie, it will reduce its lifespan a little so having several pairs in rotation will allow you to extend every pair’s lifespan.
Proper care when washing underwear – Give your undies a bit of extra attention when washing them to maintain their lifespan. Separate light-colored from darker tones to avoid color stains. Wash panties in cold to room temperature water and hand wash if possible. If you need to machine wash them, place them inside out in a lingerie bag. Use a gentle detergent and hang dry.
High-quality fabrics – Buying underwear that is made from high-quality material or sustainable material will ensure that it lasts longer compared to those made from synthetic fabrics.
Following the above tips and regularly cleaning out your lingerie drawer will allow you to re-assess your needs and desires, and start shopping for new underwear.
